Stop the Theft: The Top 4 Freight Scams Targeting New Carriers

At CarrierForge, our mission is to get your business set up for success, and that includes protecting your profits and your reputation. Unfortunately, the freight industry is a massive target for scammers. Thieves are constantly looking for new, vulnerable companies—and new authorities are often prime targets. This guide breaks down the four most common scams facing carriers today, how they work, and the exact steps you need to take to avoid falling victim. We Deliver Compliance. We Help You Defend Your Cash.

1. SCAM #1: Double-Brokering & Identity Cloning

This scam is one of the most frustrating because you do all the work, but never get paid.

🚨 How It Works (The Setup)

A legitimate load is posted. A fraudster quickly books it, then immediately re-posts or hands it off to you (the carrier) while pretending to be the original broker. You run the load, deliver the freight, and send the Proof of Delivery (POD) to the scammer. The scammer then forwards the POD to the original paying broker, collects the payment, and vanishes, leaving your company unpaid for services rendered.

🛡️ ACTION: Verify Everything Before You Hook Up

  • Verify the MC Number: Check the broker’s MC number on the FMCSA website. Does the active name match the company name on your Rate Confirmation?
  • Check the Email Domain: Real brokers use professional company domains (@brokername.com). If the email comes from a personal address like Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook, it is an instant, massive red flag.
  • Use the Official Phone Number: Only call the number listed on the FMCSA record to confirm the load, not the number provided in the email or text.

DON'T RUSH! Scammers pressure you ("This load has to go right now!") to prevent you from taking five minutes to verify their identity.

2. SCAM #2: "Deposit for a Lane" Lie

This scam targets new carriers desperate to find steady, high-paying work immediately after getting their authority.

🚨 How It Works (The Setup)

A scammer cold-calls or emails you, claiming to be a shipper or broker with access to "exclusive," "high-paying," or "daily" freight in your local area. They claim that to reserve the lane or gain access to the loads, you must pay an upfront deposit, setup fee, or insurance verification fee. Once you send the money (which is often promised as "refundable"), the scammer disappears.

🛡️ ACTION: Never Pay to Move Freight

  • The Golden Rule: Real brokers pay you to move their loads; you never pay a broker to move freight.
  • INSTANT RED FLAGS: Any request for a "Setup Fee," "Deposit," or "Insurance Fee" is a 100% scam.
  • Be Suspicious: If the rate sounds too good or the lane is supposedly "only offered to select carriers," it's bait designed to trick you.
  • Be Aware: Scammers frequently target carriers with newly activated DOT numbers, using publicly available FMCSA data.

3. SCAM #3: Fictitious Delivery Scams

This scam involves stealing the actual cargo by misdirecting the driver during the final step.

🚨 How It Works (The Setup)

When you are close to the delivery location, a scammer contacts the driver (often via text or phone) and claims the receiver's warehouse has "changed." They then redirect the driver to a fraudulent drop-off address where the criminals are waiting to steal the load.

🛡️ ACTION: Verify All Delivery Changes

  • STOP & CALL THE ORIGINAL BROKER: Use the official phone number from your original rate confirmation (or your carrier packet contact list), not the number provided in the text or email with the new address.
  • REQUIRE WRITTEN CONFIRMATION: Do not release the freight until the new address is verified in writing from the official broker or shipper email domain.
  • NEVER RELEASE FREIGHT IF IT FEELS OFF: If a change is last-minute, not in writing, or the "new guy" at the dock has no ID, stop and confirm with your contacts.

4. SCAM #4: Phishing & Cyberattacks on Carriers

This targets your business identity and your ability to operate legally by stealing your access credentials.

🚨 How It Works (The Setup)

Hackers send official-looking emails—often impersonating the FMCSA or a popular load board (like DAT). These emails instruct you to click a link to "update an audit form" or "reset a login." These fake pages are designed to steal your sensitive data:

  • FMCSA Scams: They often ask for your USDOT PIN to "verify" your authority.
  • Load Board Scams: They create a fake login page to steal your username and password.

If you provide your USDOT PIN, the scammer can hijack your entire FMCSA account, reroute future payments, and even use your identity to run other scams.

🛡️ ACTION: Protect Your Authority

  • CRITICAL WARNING: The FMCSA will NEVER email or text you asking for your USDOT PIN, SSN, or EIN. Any request for these details is a scam!
  • NEVER Click Login Links: If you receive a password reset or login request, do not click the link. Instead, go directly to the official website yourself (e.g., manually type fmcsa.dot.gov).
  • Strengthen Security: Use strong, unique passwords for all portals (FMCSA, load boards, factoring).
  • Use 2-Factor Authentication (2FA): Turn on 2FA for every service that offers it. This is the single best way to block hackers, even if they steal your password.
